max() function

function max(num1, num2) { if (num1 > num2) { return num1; } else { return num2; } }

var maxnum = max (10.1, 12.3);

alert ("The larger of the two numbers is " + maxnum);

Remove space between function name and arguments in this row:

var maxnum = max(10.1, 12.3);

And it will work fine ;)
