Methods to actively find gaps in the market to start a niche web business

I know that a lot of websites recommend solving problems from your daily life, but mine seem to be already solved for a price e.g. ABBYY FineReader, or far too complex e.g. a translator that works. Does anyone know of a solid method to find decent gaps in the market that need solving?

You would have to look at what interests and experience you have and start from there to find a need that hasn't been serviced yet and always remember to think outside the box!
