Modular Typography is awesome

After I saw Tim Brown's talk on a More Perfect Typography I knew he was onto something.

The basic idea is that just like a musical scale are notes arranged in ways that sound good to the ear. With a typography scale, text is arranged in a manner that is appealing to the eye.

Popular scales include the Golden Ratio (1.618) and a Musical Fifth (1.333). These scales are multiples of your body font size & line height. Then all of your headers are laid out proportionally so your page maintains a vertical rhythm.

You can use Gridlover to help you work out the math.

James: Really fantastic!

I've been lucky to have come up in Web design in the era that I have. I've integrated typography best practices from the start. The Elements of Typographic Style is as essential to me as Bulletproof CSS or Designing With Web Standards. It's good to see that our industry as a whole has re-emphasized the basics of design, such as good typography, rather than emphasize gimmicks.
