my command is git commit README.md ... It is not working

What am i doing wrong ?

You didn't use the flags needed to add the file and include a message. That can be done in one shot like this:

git commit -a README.md -m "message to go with the commit"

Here's a link to some really great git documentation: http://git-scm.com/documentation/ that might help you too.... (I refer to this a lot when I can't remember a particular flag, etc.)

I may have the order wrong in terms of when you put the file name... because when I use git, I break those commands into multiple commands like so:

Add the file (this tells git that you want the file tracked):

git add FILENAME

(where filename is the name of the file... so in your case it would be: git add README.md)

Commit the file (with a succinct message):

git commit -m "concise message about the commit here"
