My portfolio...all thanks to Treehouse!

It's been, what, a whole month since someone posted a portfolio site. So it's about time. Here's mine: katiewasserman.com

I built the mobile version first, I was planning on changing the menu, but I liked how clean it looked. I've seen other websites use their mobile menu on the desktop site. Check this out. Yeedor I think of it like a drawer that stores all your things to keep the top surface clean. You know the drawer is there, you can open it whenever. You don't need to have the things in the drawer spilling out all over the place. I don't claim to be a usability expert, but after looking at so many sites for inspiration, I really got sick of nav menu items in small type across the top of desktop sites. So I'm taking a stand! I really think global nav is useless anyway. I suspect users read what's put in front of them at the top and scroll down. The established patterns of a "home" link in the top left, and "about" link at the top of the page, etc. aren't totally ignored in this case. They're just cleaned up a bit.

Just my personal opinion. But I think that having a mobile menu is not a great idea. I would have never noticed that there was a main menu area until a lot later, if at all, if it wasn't for the forum post by Suli S.

The results of a recent poll show a 50/50 split between folks who prefer off screen navigation for mobile only and folks who approve it for any site. Poll Results: Off Screen Navigation Use on Mobile/Desktop

I can't find any solid UX reasons to settle this debate. Right now it's just opinion vs. opinion. And both opinions are equally common.

However, mobile use is increasing. People are getting increasingly used to mobile design patterns, like off screen navigation. And this trend will continue.

Wow this is awesome! Great work!

that's good but why do you use the mobile phone menu for the main website?

That's pretty cool going to give me a bit of a push now by looking at that to actually finish off my own. But massive well done for that, it's great nice work!

You did a great job on your portfolio. I am a fan of the 10 year anniversary one! Enjoy San Fran!
