Native and emulated (PDO)

What is the difference between Native and Emulated mysql statements and which one should I use?

Thanks in advance

I am not familiar with native and emulated as terms, but PDO is recommended because it is much easier to change databases with very minimal code changes if necessary. The other options require complete rewrites if you change databases for some reason.
