Need Help! Any E-marketers on here?

Hey Folks:

So I landed a web marketing (e marketing)internship which I am super happy about. Thanks teamtreehouse. I got the job because of the content I learned on here.

I just need some advice as to what I could expect on the job given my inexperience. Some of the stuff is pretty self-explanatory. I will receive training in web marketing, specifically in the form of on site SEO (search engine optimisation) and digital asset management.

Besides HTML, CSS and the marketing content on here, are there any additional topics I should learn on here?

Below is the spec!

• Researching and writing search-engine-optimised copy for our website and affiliated sites • photo editing • Loading and formatting content on a content management system • Populating and maintaining a digital asset management system (including attaching the correct metadata to individual assets) • Internal linking • Social media • Fact checking and copy editing

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi novice J,

I work in SEO (agency side) so feel free to pop over any questions, I'd be happy to help!

For an overview of SEO basics, http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo is a good place to start. Also check out http://searchengineland.com/guide/seo .

Hope that helps! Ali

Thanks Ali. Some useful tips on seomoz. I read the book on there yesterday and it was pretty insightful. I will read search engine land today.

I guess my main concern is how this works in the realworld as I have never done it before. In addition, do you know how HTML, WordPress and SEO come together?

THanks

Hi novice J,

Really sorry for the late reply, I've been absolutely swamped with work.

Re: your question, a solid foundational knowledge of html is really useful in SEO as there are certain page elements which search engines such as Google pay special attention to when determining how to rank a certain webpage for a given search query.

E.g. the relevance of elements such as the meta title, header tags, internal links, etc. to a given keyword all directly affect the ability of a site to rank well in Google for that keyword.

So if I were targeting the keyword "online coding classes" and had my URL, header tags, internal links, etc. optimised for that keyword (along with some 'authoritative' links from other reputable and relevant online coding sites) plus some good social media sharing/recognition, I would have a good chance of ranking well for it. A good place to learn how HTML, Wordpress and SEO come together would be http://yoast.com/. Joost de Valk, who runs the site, is a world renown Wordpress SEO expert.

Hope that helps!

Cheers Ali
