Need help making a career choice! Anyone who works in the field your opinions are appreciated.

So I am graduating from college this semester with an associate degree in multimedia but i specialized in webpage programming. I live in McAllen Tx a border town down in the southern tip of texas as you can imagine the tech industry down here is not very big.

Today i was offered a job as the lead developer for a local marketing agency here in my city.

They offered me a starting pay of $20,00/year with regular raises depending on performance.

My question is does the salary look good?

I would be in charge of developing their clients sites mainly in WordPress since they want to have complete control of the back-end. But I will have the flexibility of making the decision if the site should be done on a CMS or not.

So does it sound good?

Any opinions from people already established in the field are greatly appreciated!

Hi Victor,

This is totally just one opinion and it’s just meant to be how I would think through your situation:

I think that it might be beneficial to take the job while you look for work somewhere else. Some of the benefits would be:

  • real-world professional experience to put on your resume
  • you can be making money while you look for a better job
  • you can be learning in a professional workspace while you do your job search
  • tech companies prefer to hire people who are already working in the industry rather than sitting at home looking for jobs
  • you can translate your professional experience in your hometown into a higher starting pay when you do get that junior job you really want(now they are hiring someone with six months experience instead of zero experience)
  • you get your foot in the door

My advice is to take the job and on your first day of work start looking for jobs in Austin.

You should definitely take it. Take it and keep your options open. Once you have that first job on your CV, it'll be plain-sailing after that. Don't turn down that foot in the door! That's by far the hardest step!

If you have nothing to lose, go for it! The experience will be extremely valuable for you in the long-run. But don't stay too much there if you can find a better paying job later, of course!

Hi everyone!

Thanks a lot for chiming in on this thread with advice on my situation.

Nathan yea I know what you mean bro I've been taking all the points you made in to consideration and from the way I see it i'm for sure going to take the job it does pay a bit more than my current one anyway.

And about Austin I'm actually planning a move over there as soon as my girlfriend graduates college by next year since the tech scene is better than in my city, so i'm hoping that with the experience I gain at this marketing agency it's easier for me to find a job over there.
