Java Java Objects (Retired) Creating the MVP Comparing Characters

Need help on how to perform what's being ask I think i'm missing the logics or not understanding what to do.

ConferenceRegistrationAssistant.java

  public int getLineFor(String lastName) {
    /* If the last name is between A thru M send them to line 1
       Otherwise send them to line 2 */
    int line = 0;


    if((lastName.indexOf(lastName) >='A') && (lastName.indexOf(lastName) <= 'M'))
    {
      line = 1;
    }
    else
    {
      line = 2;
    }

   return line;
  }

I understand what you are trying to do here, but I think where you are going wrong is with the way you are getting the first letter of lastName. I would do something like:

    char letter = lastName.charAt(0);

And then you can check to see if letter is greater than M and shoot them into Line 1 otherwise they head on over to Line 2.

Your Advice was a success, thanks a lot, I wasn't sure if I could use another variable and I also thought the " .indexOf " got the value of what was in the first cell of the string. Ken Alger
