How do I set to not take up the entire line? I thought "inline" would do that

Keep the inline-block value and then set the width so that it won't take up the whole line

You can't adjust width and height with an inline element. A <span> tag would be an example of an inline element. Other elements can come before and after it on the same line. Inline elements don't respect top and bottom margin or padding; only left and right. Inline-block allows other elements to sit next to it side by side, and you can adjust the width, height, margin, and padding. A block element forces a line break after the block so that nothing else can sit next to it, like an image tag.

Your code needs to look like this :

.main-nav  {
  display: inline-block;
}
