Not getting a Notification?

I followed the video exactly, but am not getting a notification. I am getting a Toast with this information in it...

Developer warning for package 
'com.cstewart.musicmachine'
Failed to post notification on channel 'null'
See log for more details.

Has something change with notifications? Do I need to specify a channel somewhere?

I don't see any useful information in the log.

This seems to be an issue with using the latest Android Studio (3.0.1) and support library.

I was using the new defaults:

compiledSdkVersion 26
targetedSdkVersion 26

implementation 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:26.1.0'

After changing to:

compiledSdkVersion 23
targetedSdkVersion 23

implementation 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:23.4.0'

and deleting the resources specific to versions greater than 23.

It works just fine.

The material will be updated to cover any new requirements eventually.
