Conventionally, the Object-Oriented paradigm is considered most suited to programs that focus on data ("things"), and Functional Programming is best when the focus is on processes. But this is an over-simplification and real-world situations rarely can be easily identified as entirely one or the other.

Author Richard Warburton suggests that as these programming paradigms evolve, they are actually moving closer toward one another. The differences and similarities are discussed in a free e-book available from O'Reilly publishers titled Object-Oriented vs. Functional Programming.
