photoshop - masks and brush tool video

Hi, in the this video when we use the brush tool to refine the image. at around 2:25 she says "black to hide" "white to reveal" what does that mean? when i click my image it just starts to show the original background that was once there but its faded. I'm confused. Thank you.

when you are working in a pixel mask it only uses two colors. Black or White. If you use your brush tool and you click on the mask and brush over it in black, it will hide the part of the image you are brushing over. So if you make a mistake and want to add some detail back, you brush it over with white and it will show it again.

Here is a video that makes it easier to explain

I see, thank you very much.
