Quick question about String:

Why is it that in this example we cannot use String before "response" in the do while statement? Thanks!

Example.java 
// I have initialized a java.io.Console for you. It is in a variable named console.
String response; 
do{
 response=console.readLine("Do you understand do while loops?");
}while (response.equalsIgnoreCase("No"));

Because you are only meant to specify the type of a variable when you are creating it. Since the response variable is created outside the loop you can't create it again in the loop. Java does not allow you to redeclare a variable that already exists within the current scope.

The reason for why it is created outside the loop is that if it was created in the loop then it would only exist within the body of the loop. Which means that you could not reference it as the condition for the loop like is done in your code example.
