Ready to Start Working in the Tech Industry

Dear lovely people at Treehouse,

I was hoping some students and teachers can share some ideas of how to effectively reach out to local tech companies and start working in this industry. I am ready to start working as a Front End Developer / WordPress developer. What would be the best way to approach companies and start asking for work? How do you get hired to be a full time web designer and developer in this industry?

Please share your suggestions.

Sebastian

Hopefully, you're in a big enough area where there is at least one Meetup you can go to where you can meet other folks who work in the same field as you want. Usually, the best way to get in is by knowing someone.

Other than that, I would definitely have a GitHub account and share your work on there. You could also start a blog and just write posts about stuff you learned.

Hope all that helps!

Hi Sebastian!

Do you have a portfolio?

Do you have a Github repo?

When you can check those points off Jon Wood gave you a great idea with the meetups. Personally, what I did when I wanted to find work was to contact the companies myself. I didn't wait for their job ads to come out but reached out to the companies asking them if they was in need of a front end developer. This turned out to be a great way for me to find a job as every company responded very nicely to me reaching out.

I hope that helps!

Hi Gang,

Thank you both for your comments. I have a portfolio, you can visit my online portfolio here: https://sebastiannadeau.ca/

I have numerous GitHub repos with small projects. One of my friends who is working as a developer told me to work on creating a stellar portfolio. I will keep working and developing my portfolio to reflect my current skill set. I live in Ottawa in Canada. I am aware of Meetup.com and have been going to some events. There is also this website for more formal professional conferences. http://lanyrd.com/ It was mentioned in the blogging course on Treehouse.

Thanks for the advice guys. :)

Awesome, that portfolio is great Sebastian!

My advice then is that you do some research on the local companies, list the ones you would really like to work for and then start sending them direct emails asking them if they need someone with your skills. The chance is they will really like how you reach out to them without them advertising for someone.

Good luck Sebastian, you can do this!
