Really struggling with JS - feeling demotivated

Hey everyone,

I've just finished traversing the DOM and I found it really really hard, in the challenges I just never know where to start I just don't know where I'm going wrong in the videos. Even the previous . things like if statements, functions etc I never know when to actually use them.

The videos are 6-8 minutes long and I can be on one video for easily 20-30 minutes, just writing notes and trying to understand it, then when I look down I see everyone posting their solution to the challenge etc. I just feel like I'm not progressing. I think I've never really been a good 'learner' I struggle to take information in.

I don't want to stop, but I find it all really confusing. Does anyone have any advice?

Appreciate it.

Your approach sounds good to me, I had and still do have very similar experiences when learning.

Taking the time to learn it is no bad thing either, and off the back of a 6 minute video you could easily go and spend another several hours reading documentation, blogs, watching videos etc to help reinforce your learning.

I think the most important thing can be just understanding the concept, you then have it in your back pocket for when you might want/need to traverse the DOM. Taking the time to understand it is no bad thing, and the benefits will be compounded as you continue your learning.

Keep going and stay positive :D

Thank you very much guys. Steve that was a great video, thanks for the link! Since I've moved to jQuery everything seems much easier? hope I didn't just jinx myself, lol.

I need to just be persistent and understand that it's going to be difficult. Thank you again :)

The experience of "hitting the wall" is not uncommon when learning large amounts of new information. It's a topic of an episode you might enjoy of The Treehouse Show (which features some advice from me!).
