I want to secure a website domain before it is taken... how can one do this while I continue to build my website?

you just need to buy your domain, it is around 10$/year. Once you decided to create website then buy some hosting. It is the best way to secure your domain

you can but it at godaddy for example. There you can check if domain is still available. Also, check for their disounts, I managed to buy domain for 2$ few times. https://www.godaddy.com/ Beside that, you have https://www.namecheap.com/domains/registration/results.aspx?domain=findmyme and many others...

I know that Amazon provides some very hi-speed and inexpensive hosting, you might want to look into that.

If you use Blogger, you should consider Google Domains, which makes domain-intergration really easy. Otherwise, you could choose Google Domains too, but you could try GoDaddy or Amazon domains as referenced above.
