SMTP issue with PHPMailer

I followed "How to Build A Basic PHP Website" course for the backend part of my contact form (email validation, sending the email, etc.). I would currently like some help setting up SMTP authentication. However, this is kind of hard to do with gmail's security standards (gmail is the email client that I am testing with and will be using for the live site). I have looked into the Treehouse blog post on using SMTP with Gmail as well as researched it. online.
