startActivityForResult()

So I have an email application where I couldn't return to the home screen without skipping over sending an email which was the purpose of the page. I asked this before and someone told me that you should use startActivityForResult(). However the documentation confuses me and I only understand part of it and can't it to work. Can someone please give me a full clear example of how to use this and the onActivityResult() method?
