Courses Plus Student 16,635 PointsStarting with Console - Ubuntu or Linux mint ?
Hi,
Im a Windows user. I never used any Command line OS (POSIX).
I know on teamtree you have given a Console app. But I wish to install a new OS on my windows using Virtual Machine.
Can you please help me download the best Command line OS. Ubuntu or Linux mint ? Also, I would like to know does Linux Mint or Ubuntu has inbuild web dev app. Like Xampp, sublime text. ?
And where can I download it legally.

3,667 PointsUbuntu is a flavor of linux, as is mint, fedora etc. Xamp, sublime etc are either downloadable from a browser or the software manager with your choosen linux flavor. Just google for Sublime text linux and you should be able to find the relevant download.

3,667 PointsI've personally not used Mint but Ubuntu is incredibly user friendly, easy to install, free, and a great way to get into using linux. From a web dev point of view there's nothing which you shouldn't be able to do on it, provided your pc is reasonable.

Courses Plus Student 16,635 Pointsbut on there website it says only for 18 months
Ben Russell
3,667 PointsThat is related to how long that particular version is supported. They will release a newer version before that 18 months expires anyway. If not download and use the lte version supported for 5 years. There's no costs involved on either. That's one of great things about the open sourced nature of linux.

Courses Plus Student 16,635 Pointsthanks Ben, Im download Ubuntu. Btw I also found that Valve developers support Ubuntu. And Ubuntu is good for gaming too :D since I'm a big fan of Dota2 and BF3

Treehouse Project ReviewerMy opinion is to download both and try in vm since they are free, but it sounds like that's what you ended up doing!

Courses Plus Student 16,635 PointsI used Ubuntu at first as you can see from my last comments. But Ubuntu is a bit ram hoggy, as im using Linux on VirtualMachine on windows 7.
I have installed LinuxMint 14 now, and I can tell you that. I find it very fast. It uses only 256-512MB RAM. And I think it is using some portion from Ubuntu only. Sorry if Im wrong my first ever Linux OS.
But yea Now im gonna use Mint only.

Treehouse Project ReviewerNewest version of Ubuntu was just released today. Performance improvements are apparently a big part of the update.
