PHP PHP Basics Daily Exercise Program String Manipulation

String Manipulation Rasmus Lerdorf

I've watched the video multiple times but I don't have a good understanding of two key points on the code below

1) for the fullname string why do you need . ' ' . between the two string variables 2) for echo why do you need the . before the quotations

<?php

//Place your code below this comment

$firstName = 'Rasmus'; $lastName = 'Lerdorf';

$fullname = $firstName . ' ' . $lastName;

echo $fullname . " was the original creator of PHP" . "\n";

?>

The dot is the string concatenation operator in PHP, which is used to join strings together to make bigger strings.

It can be used to add literal strings together, in the case of:

" was the original creator of PHP" . "\n"

and can also be used with string variables too, in the case of:

$fullname = $firstName . ' ' . $lastName;
