Switching texteditor

How do i get to switch from using VIM to nano. Git commit in terminal opens VIM, but can't get back to terminal.

i switched EDITOR=nano but that didnt open it in nano.

Could I please get some help?

To make nano your default editor when using git run the command git config --global core.editor "nano"
