Symbol Stainer Tool Makes Black Boxes

When using the Symbol Stainer Tool to change the color of the yellow stars, it makes black boxes instead of changing the color of the stars. The only difference I can find is that I am using PC instead of Mac. Is there an option I need to turn on so it selects the star symbol before using the stainer tool?

So it is a bug within the program! so in current illustrator The symbol stainer tool is broken. It is not you or you technique the tool is broken I have and many have the same issue.

here is a link to the adobe forum discussing the issue. https://forums.adobe.com/message/7823217

Hi Ryan, sorry for the delay in getting back to you from your answer request.

I cant offer any more that Trace already has unfortunately, although as a pc user you have access to a rather cheap program Serif DrawPlus X8, they are the makers of Affinity which has gotten great reviews in a number of mags.

I got caught up in the adobe world but have since learned the tools on serif, which ok takes time like learning anything new. However it is a nice one off payment and does everything I need for web design. They also have a Photp Plus, for what would be your replacement for Photo Shop.

I followed along with the illustrator videos picking up the tips and techniques and then put them into practice on Draw Plus.

Hope this gives you an insight as I am against paying adobe that much money for something I use once a week :)

Thank you everyone! I understand now that this is a bug and nothing that I am doing wrong. I have submitted a bug report to Adobe. Hopefully it gets resolved soon. I appreciate the other programs recommended by Craig as well, I will check them out.
