You were pretty close, the echo needs to be declared outside the returnValue function:

function returnValue(drink) {
  return drink;
}

var echo = returnValue("drink");

The contents of the functions should still just be the line of code returning the drink. Setting the value to the result of calling the function should be outside of the function.

function returnValue(drink){
  return drink;
}
 var echo = returnValue("string");
