$id in your example is the array key.

For example:

<?php
   $arr[0] = "Melon";
   $arr[1] = "Apple";
   foreach ($arr as $key => $value) {
      echo "Key: " . $key . "Value: " . $value . "<br />\n";
   }
?>

Will ouput:

Key: 1 Value: Melon

Key: 2 Value: Apple
