Using Ajax like a PHP includes

I know with PHP you can make includes requests. Like having a navbar, header and footer in a separate file that gets called when the page is loaded. That way you can make changes dynamically. Can you use Ajax the same way? With a page load event? Just want to know if this is possible, best practice or practical in the real world.
