If its a question of if there is work on You local environment I can't say much but if you think globally there are tons of work. I can say that because I will start a freelance work in two weeks for a writer who lives south of NY and I'm living in Turkey, so basically there are tons of work out there and we are going on more digital life style every day that makes world in demand more designers, programmers and engineers. here some things from my perspective to have a better chances on work life

1-first of all have at least 1 back-end language in your tool belt. For this PHP is a good one its not that complicated and can easily learn, with this extra You can tell what You need to back-end developer faster with more accuracy.

2-We are living in a mobile life style as humanity. Why this is important You have to find a way to design for lots of screen size, because of this most of the big companies go for material design concept with that in mind really have good understanding on colors, really most of designers say they do but there are to many variables most of people doesn't count like eye problems, dyslexia etc.

3-When you get job (I won't say if cause you will get on the journey) give finish time like +2 days at minimum to finish it no one will know what future brings, some little problems like operating system crash will send you more than you want and you will be happy for that +2 days.

4- Have a portfolio. Not only works you did for others work for your self every opportunity. It will be great to have 500+ customers works in Your portfolio but at first people hire You on Your free time works. Make a habit working for yourself daily like a hour or so it will pay in time and You will be happy to do that when that day comes.

--this will be most important note but not a work related as others :"use more than 1 back up!". I've been there and that cost me a lot of things so use all of chances like google drive, old usb sticks even emails. Nothing can be happen but don't relay on chance.

and have fun with your work.

As a web developer I can confirm that there are plenty of web development roles availible atleast here in the UK. There is always need for developers with the influx of start up companies requiring bespoke service platforms and bespoke software.

Web designers on the other hand seem to be sprouting up everywhere in a very saturated/competitive market.

Unless they are incredible designers, I generally see developers winning job offers even for design roles because they provide a more refined beskpoke platform or user friendly experience for customers that designers using wordpress and similiar premade CMS just will not accomplish.

If you want to shine as a web designer in the current market you really need delve even the tinyest bit into backend development, and get a basic understanding of how it works.

This is based on solo work, in my opinion web designers strive in studio/team positions where they only have to focus on aesthetics and having a developer availible to make it happen from a technical perspective.

Functionality > Content > Design

UI UX Designers, Back-End developers are in much higher demand, which you will probably notice in the considerably different wages offered in comparison to a frontend webdesigner at full time roles.

I think chances are that there will be plenty of work for web designers in the foreseeable future. This is especially true in cities were the tech industry is booming (eg San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Austin, New York), but even if you want to live in a small town I'm sure that there will be plenty of work around. The demand for web designers will most likely exceed the amount of web designers entering the workforce. That is true now and it will most likely hold true for a long time. That said, I'd echo what Ashley said. Learn more than just traditional web design. Having an extra skillset can really help you stand out and get a good position. Here are some ideas on some "extra" skills that you can hone in on:

Motion design, User experience, Usability testing, Wearables design, Backend programming, Marketing and research, 3D animation, Graphic design

Those are just a few ideas from the top of my head. I encourage you to at least dabble in most of those. The good news is that once you get a good understanding of design fundamentals, you'll find that all of these different forms of design still follow the same principles and you can easily develop a skill in one thing and apply it to another.
