What are some ways for beginning web designers to get practical experience?

I've used most all of the online learning sites for web design and still feel like I can't connect the dots for all the knowledge I've gained. I'd like to put some of my skills to the test and try to build something. Any good suggestions?

Why not pick a local business that either hasn't got a website, or has one that is pretty terrible that you could improve upon. At least then you've already got the content to populate the website.

I'd say network with people that are also in the field..perhaps find someone to mentor you along the way. I'm in the same position as you are, and before I take on a task at a local business, I'd prefer to practice on a side project that will help solidify what I learned on here. Scenario: A buddy of mine is gonna teach me everything he knows in order to help manage his site --since I have some foundational knowledge, its a lot easier for him to show me things. Don't get discouraged! All you have to do is find a programming/designer pal who's willing to help.

I`m using www.99designs.co.uk to get some experience. It is quite a challenge to win a project but you can be focused on certain task and try to learn certain skills for the particular project.
