The best idea, at first, is to focus on understanding the basic functionality of responsive websites along designing at least three versions of the same front-end UI for monitors, tablets and mobile phones.

A positive user experience depends on proper navigation, its adaptability, and in most cases, I see too many responsive sites making the images and spacing too small when viewed on mobile devices. The screen gets smaller and resolution gets higher... so a designer that understands how to improve the space a finger will have to navigate, will be one step closer to making a better overall interface for the user.

Create themed designs and be prepared to show how you can establish or improve their UX through a fair understanding of what's required to translate the aesthetics you created into functional code. It's also a good way to prove that you'll work well in a team environment.

Great answer! Usability is one of your primary concerns. Starting with wire framing and prototypes. Designing those to focus on the different platforms, and being easily usable.

Having others test your designs for usability and try perfecting it. Its funny how you hear alot of ppl saying, "ohhh, yeah I guess I am a UX Designer, I just didn't know that's what they called it".
