What is the best place to start to learn APIs for e-commerce?

I am starting a website selling retail items. I want to start off simple with shopify or big commerce as it would cost me $500-1000 mo. for a hosting company that already is linked in with my distributors API. I basically want to gain the knowledge necessary to link Shopify/Big Commerce to distributors' live feed. Thanks.
