The select keyword is the clause that allows you to select what data fields will be returned in your query.

Let's say for example you have a table called "movies" that has 5 fields.

  • Title
  • Age Restriction
  • Director
  • Runtime
  • Main Lead

But you wanted to run a query that only selected 3 of those fields. You'd write

SELECT Title, Director, Runtime FROM movies;

Or to select them all quickly you'd do.

SELECT * FROM movies;

Those are the very basics of the select clause.

Hi Jonathan Grieve,

Thank you for your input, but what about this, SELECT UPPER('Hello');

This an SQL function that converts the string that is passed into Uppercase i.e. Capital letters.

You might use it for example to convert the records of a given column into upper case text.
