When mysql is in use, is there an advantage on using the functions in this video vs mysql php specific ones?

i.e. mysql_connect, mysql_select_db, mysqli_query

I'm not sure which video you are referencing, but those extensions were deprecated in PHP 5.5.0, and were removed in PHP 7.0.0.
