Why can I not query my database and get a result with this code?

The connect statement displays "Connected".

But I can't get it to query any result from the entry field.

    echo "Failed to connect to MySQL: (" . $conn->connect_errno . ") " . $conn->connect_error;
} else {
  echo "Connected!";

}

$result = $conn->query($sql);

    while($row = $result->fetch_assoc()) {
      $entry = $row['entry'];
      echo "<p>$entry</p>";
    }
