why did the self-align moved on the y axis and not the x axis?

Actually, "self-align" adjusts along the cross axis, which will always be perpendicular to the flex-direction.

So if you were seeing it adjust the Y-axis, then your flex-direction must have been "row" (the default) or "row-reverse".
