Why do you use an external file?

On this video, they use an external file to handle the form. I'm just curious about why you are doing it instead of using the same file?

I think they want to show you a way of separation of concerns: separation of presentation ( the HTML ) from the actual processing system ( the PHP and databases stuff ); but, yes, of course, you can do the same thing in the same file.
