Why doesn't this look right?

This technique looks incredible with inanimate objects, and the picture looks great in thumbnails when its small. I think I need more texture... and I have no clue what is going on with that back leg. I used a black cat and turned up the contrast for the picture (I go over the whole in thing in a layer in solid color then go over the shadows in multiple layers in black and then lower the opacity to 30), I'm wondering if I should have used a white cat. I have no idea how to get the texture I need. Suggestions on how to fix this?

I can say that, for the whole "it looking better in a thumbnail," it's probably got something to do with the way the details blend together. Have you ever looked at a van Gogh painting up close? It's a similar situation in a simpler way. All of the heavy brush strokes are too disconnected in it's original size. Also, it is very obvious that the shadows are not cast properly.

The back leg is def. funky. I would say that it's the same problem that you were having before. Just not enough subtle changes when needed. It's very rough. But, like any normal painting, you could keep going and going until it's what you want.

Also, it's a cat on a sun. Tough subject. lol
