Why is Jason using a+ open mode instead of a, for the IO open method?

This question regards the video called File from the Ruby Core and Standard Library lesson.

It is quite clear that the a open mode would have been enough, since it's a write function. It's also better from a security perspective to only implement functions that are actually needed by a program.
