If you haven't already spent time with Java, I would suggest starting with the Java Learning Track and at least make sure you are comfortable with the idea of objects.

Just like building a website uses HTML, CSS, Javascript, and sometimes other technologies, an Android app is composed of different parts. What you posted above is XML, which is kind of the Android equivalent of HTML - it defines the layout of each screen in the app. But all of the app's behavior, including user interaction and dynamic screen changes, are controlled with Java.
